4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Product, But Be Warned... April 2, 2012

By Xarphael

I am extremely satisfied with my purchase, but wanted to point out a few things that might be an issue for other buyers. First of all, the color of the lenses in the picture are not at all the color of the lenses on the product. The lenses are actually a bright yellow/orange color, like is listed in the "technical details" further down the page. I'm not sure if it's the camera not accurately picking up the color or if the picture is of a different product, but the lenses are in no way the pictured greenish/bluish color.
Also, the foam padding, like other have stated, is thin and in my case barely glued down. It will fall off on one side soon. Since I bought these with the intention of modification, it is not a problem for me. And I can see that the large frame would be uncomfortable on some people- they cover from my cheekbones to above my eyebrows- but I find them quite comfy.
Overall, a great, funky product for a relatively cheap price. If I need to, I will buy a pair again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you really need this October 18, 2001

By Mark Wilden

Be aware that many of the items in this set are duplicates of each other. Also, there are only two nutdrivers. The screw guide is good, and it's smaller and easier to use than the one sold separately. Certainly, the quality seems excellent. But really think carefully about whether the two tips included with the screwdriver itself aren't sufficient, because this set just doesn't add that much.

Excellent Quality May 9, 2008

By Johnson VINE™ VOICE

I have had this set for several months now and have come to appreciate what others call "duplicates" as well as the perceived poor quality of the case. First off the duplicates in the case are the pieces you use the most, phillips bits. Because the tolerances of screws are not as tight as they should be I consistently round out either the head of the screw or the bit. The fact that this kit comes with several allows you to fit the bit tip to the screw. Second the longer bits are great for areas where a little extra length is required. I recently installed a hi-loft in my garage and the longer bits came in very handy and these bits don't normally come in a set this inexpensive. Lastly the case, the size of the case is perfect when I have a small job to do around the house and don't want to carry my 100 piece case around. The bits don't fall out of their holders like many bits in other cases. Yes they are a little snug and I have large hands so it can be difficult to get them out but I would prefer that to all of them falling out every time I open the case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Dewalt 1/2 Gal 18V. Cordless Wet / Dry Vac, September 24, 2007

    By

John (Michigan) - See all my reviews

Its a little noisy, but thats because it's actually doing something. If you already own 18 volt DeWalt tools, batteries, and a charger, then this is a really nice all-purpose tool to have around for a reasonable price. I haven't used it with any fluids yet, but it seems to have enough power to do that with no problem. The quick-change-quick-charge batteries are just as handy on this as they are on all of the other DeWalt tools. This won't do what a shop vac does, but it handles medium-small particles nicely. It doesn't come with any tools other than the detachable hose. The pictures are not always exceedingly clear, but the hose is normally stretched over the handle and anchored in the small yellow end which serves as the main vacuum nozzle. This "nozzle" is hard plastic with a fixed shape, but it seems to work well for most encounters. The detachable hose stretches out a few feet so it reaches about as far as an arm can reach, making it is handy, too. I think that this is worthy of the DeWalt name.

    Great product, April 25, 2007

Jody (Maryland, USA) - See all my reviews

Just got this vacuum today and it is great. Has wonderful suction. Other reviews talk about it being noisy. This is not true. It is no louder than any other dust buster. I bought it without the battery as we have plenty of them from other Dewalt tools. I have already thrown away my dust buster. Highly recommend it.

If you have a big head, these glasses might be too small. They are 135mm wide which is too small for me. Home depot and Lowes sell ones that are 140mm which fit me just fine. Check the side of the glasses where the width is printed.

Let's face it, you're wearing two pairs of glasses at the same time. There's very little hope of this being a super comfortable situation. However this particular product comes quite close to being unnoticeable, which I think is the goal. It fits nicely over my glasses, and seems very sturdy and protective. My face does get hot and sweaty while using them, but it has been a hot, sweaty summer, so I can let that slide. Considering that I'm looking through two layers of lenses, my vision is nice and clear, very much unimpaired. Combining these pros with the low price makes these glasses a very good buy in my book.

I was worried that for the price, I would be getting a flimsy product. Not true. I was tired of my unnecessary and painful splash goggles in the lab, but worried that these would not fit over my glasses or cover enough of my face to shield it properly. That is not so, these fit over my clunky glasses very well and provide more than adequate coverage without looking stupid! Better yet, these have not scratched yet and I mishandle everything!

5.0 out of 5 stars DeWalt Tools are best on market December 2, 2005

By T. Schulte

I own/run a low voltage company in St. Louis. We pre-wire houses for phone/TV/networking, install intercoms, security, and central vacuum systems, and home theatres as well. We currently have 20+ DeWalt 18volt cordless tools and at least that many batteries. We are constantly asked by carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and competitiors how the tools hold up.
We can drill 100+ 3/4 holes on one battery every day with no problem. We can drill 10+ 2 1/4" holes with a DeWalt self feed bit on one battery. The recip saw, the circular saw, the angle grinder, and the flashlights all work flawlessly. We even have the vacuums so we can clean up after ourselves.
Now the old batteries (all black) last about 1 year for regular use. We have a few new batteries (yellow top) that are a little over a year old that show no sign of slowing down.
We have found that when it is cold they do not last as long. Also the charge needs to be in a semi warm area (not in a garage). Also, the battery needs to be drained most of the way before charging. Repeated recharging of a half dead battery dramatically reduces the life. But any battery manufacturer will tell you that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dewalt makes some great stuff. I love my 18v cordless tools! April 22, 2006

By Mike

I'm hearing a lot of complaints about the batteries. Face it, the batteries are based on NiCad technology. NiCad are not known for infinite shelf-life, has a memory, and absolutely hates to be placed on a charger for extended periods of time.
Now knowing all the good and bad things about NiCads, these batteries are absolutely no different than you will find in any other system using NiCads. If you don't understand the why your batteries are dying off so quickly, it most likely can be explained by researching the things to do and not do to NiCads.
I've beat the hell out of the tools and the batteries and still manage to get an excess of 2yrs of service out of these batteries. If you open one of these up, all you find is a series of sub-C NiCad batteries in them. Count them up and just go price sub-C NiCad batteries with the same Amp-Hr rating. You will soon fine that even if you tried to replace the batteries into the existing battery case, it is still cheaper and easier to buy replacements.
Rechargable batteries of any technology do NOT have infinite life. With absolutely following standard practice care of the battery type, you can extend this life to the theoritical max. That is hard to do on the job site when you need to get the job done quick. I use the 15min. charger, which is great but at a significant cost in service life of the batteries. You are never supposed to charge the batteries while they are hot. This means if you run it down at the job site, you shouldn't be placing them into a rapid charger. You should have enough spare batteries to get you busy while letting a natural battery rotation occur that insures they are cool when you charge. Slow charging extends the life of the batteries as well by getting internal temperatures lower. You should never leave a NiCad on a charger. You should run down the NiCad battery before charging to help avoid memory.
You can mention any battery technology and there are do's and don'ts. I've had Lithium Ion batteries in a cell phone last less than 1yr.
It all depends on your battery usage habits. Once you understand what you are supposed to do to extend the batteries life, you can usually figure out pretty quickly why you are not getting the life you expected.
Good solid product. I'd buy them again without hesitation. And I have yet to see any group of cordless tool manufacture's use a standard battery interface so that you can use the same battery in different brands of cordless tools. So being locked-in to a particular cordless tool manufacturer is a given.
This is all the price you pay for being cordless. The only way around all this is to pull out the ole 50' extension cord.
IMHO

Radiation Alert INSPECTOR Microprocessor-Based Ionizing Radiation Detector

buy-from-amazon

Product Features

  • Radiation detector used for surveying levels of potentially harmful ionizing particles and rays in the environment such as in naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) contamination, and for gross wipe counting, contamination detection of packages, equipment and people, regulatory inspections, and for low energy radionuclide detection
  • Microprocessor-based radiation detection meter with 4-digit, LCD display of millirem (mR) per hour and function indicators
  • Detects low levels of alpha and beta particles, and gamma and x-rays for a range of ionizing radiation type detection
  • Built-in, adjustable timer indicates radiation level increases
  • Red, flashing counter and a beep noise indicate each ionizing radiation increase event

Product Description

The Radiation Alert Inspector is a hand-held, microprocessor-based radiation detector that detects potentially harmful ionizing alpha and beta particles, and gamma and x-ray radiation, has a four-digit, LCD digital display of millirem (mR) per hour, and function indicators. This radiation detector can detect low levels of the four main types of ionizing alpha and beta particles, and gamma rays and x-rays over automatic operational ranges. It is optimized to detect small changes (low levels) in radiation levels and to have high sensitivity to many common radionuclides.

The Inspector counts ionizing radiation changes, and the unit of measurement is selected and displayed using the mode switch. The display shows various indicators, based on the mode setting, the function performed, and remaining battery power. These include low battery, alert, timer, total mode (to see the number of times a reading should be multiplied by to obtain the correct radiation count), calibration mode, utility menu (timer, calibration, alarm set mode), and units of measurement. It has automatic operational ranges for a variety of radiation detection. A red, flashing counter and a beep noise indicate each ionizing radiation change event. The display updates every three seconds. At low background levels, which are typical in a geographic area, the update is the moving average for the most recent 30-second time period. The time period for the moving average decreases, as radiation levels increase. The radiation detector has a 2”, halogen-quenched, uncompensated Geiger Mueller (GM) tube with a thin, mica end window for sensing ionizing radiation. A radiation symbol on the front label marks the center of the detector. It is used for surveying naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) contamination, gross wipe counting, contamination inspection of packages, equipment, and people, regulatory inspections, and for low energy radionuclide detection. This detector has a utility menu on the back of the unit. The menu has a three-second response, and switches the detector from mR/hr and counts per minute (CPM) to μSv/hr and counts per second (CPS). It also can reset the calibration factor to 100, adjust calibration, and reset all settings to the default factory setting. The radiation detector has an audio indicator with an internally mounted beeper that can be turned off for silent operation. The Inspector has a one-year, limited warranty for materials and craftsmanship, and a 90-day warranty on the GM tube.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice detector March 24, 2012

By Joe in Memphis

I have the Inspector EXP+, it is the same exact detector, but with an external probe on a 40" cable. They both use the LND-7317 "pancake" Geiger Muller tube, and are VERY sensitive, especially to Alpha. The LND-7317 GM tube is much more sensitive than the smaller LND-712 GM tubes that a lot of the other Geiger counters of this size are using. Let me put "much more sensitive" into perspective. I also have a VERY NICE Mazur PRM-8000 that uses the LND-712 GM tube. I just did an hour long count with both detectors sitting on my window sill of background radiation, the LND-712 based detector registered 1,020 Counts or 17 CPM. The LND-7317 based detector (the Inspector EXP+) registered 2,243 counts, or 37.38 CPM. I also tested a Uranium Glass bowl with both of them, the LND-712 based detector registered 430 counts over 10 minutes for 43 CPM, the LND-7317 based detector (the Inspector EXP+) registered 10,960 Counts, for 1,096 CPM. I would say that is "much more sensitive". The Inspector+ will detect and count Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and X-Ray. It is a no frills (as far as the programming goes) solidly built detector that you can turn on, wait 30 seconds until it beeps (to achieve statistical accuracy), and you are ready to measure in CPM, CPS, mR/h, uSv/h. It IS that simple. It has an internal counter that can be set from 1 minute to 24 hours to take long surveys, and an alert that can be set in either CPM or mR/h. The alert range is 0~ 160,000 CPM or 0~50 mR/h. The display is not lighted. It comes with a "Certificate Of Conformance" that warrants the factory calibration for 12 months, and a case. The instruction manual is on a smaller than normal sized CD ROM. It is a very well laid out manual. I highly recommend either the Inspector+, or the Inspector EXP+. If you are looking for an LND-712 based detector the Mazur PRM-8000 is probably the best you will find. As a side note, if you are interested in the study of radiation or the proper use of Geiger Counters, check out antiprotons youtube page, there is a LOT of good information in his videos.
